Violence Against Women in Asian/Pacific Islander communities* 

  • Approximately 21-55% of Asian women report experiencing intimate physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner during her lifetime.¹
  • The top three trends in abuse among Asian women include emotional/verbal abuse, physical abuse and economic abuse.²
  • In an anonymous survey of A/PI survivors in Washington, D.C., 28.5% of women were abused by their in-laws.³

Domestic Violence in the United States 

  • 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced physical violence by an intimate partner.⁴
  • 44% of percent of lesbian women and 61% of bisexual women experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner at some point in their lifetime.⁵
  • 26% percent of gay men and 37% of bisexual men experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner at some point in their lifetime.⁶
  • 30-50% of transgender people experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime.⁷

Statistics in the Washington, DC metropolitan area

  • In 2014, the DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) received 32,940 calls related to domestic violence, about 1 call every 16 minutes.⁸
  • 5,005 petitions for Civil Protection Orders were filed in 2013, a 7% increase in filings from 2012. ⁹
  • 5,873 people were served at the two Domestic Violence Intake Center (DVIC) locations in 2013, a 7% overall increase from 2012.10
